The Primary Causes of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a highly common condition that most of us have experienced from time to time. One experiences acid reflux when the acid from the stomach flows back up into the esophagus. If you are wondering what causes acid reflux, read on to find out.

1. Hiatal hernia
Hiatal hernia is a common cause of cold sores. The diaphragm is a muscle that separates the chest and the stomach. It also helps to keep the stomach acids in their place. When the upper region of the stomach and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) move into the chest cavity, the diaphragm is unable to retain the acid in the stomach. The acid, therefore, flows up into the esophagus, resulting in acid reflux.

2. Obesity and pregnancy
People who are overweight or obese or those have a lot of belly fat could also suffer from frequent symptoms of acid reflux due to the added pressure on the stomach. Due to this reason, pregnant women are also prone to this condition.

3. Smoking
We all know that smoking or tobacco in cigarettes is not good for our overall health. But did you know it could also be a cause of acid reflux. Tobacco can affect the functioning of the LES, causing it to relax. The LES is a ring of muscle at the opening of the stomach and it is responsible for keeping stomach acids out of the esophagus. When it does not function properly or is relaxed, acid reflux occurs.

4. Certain foods
When it comes to the causes of acid reflux, certain foods can be included. Consuming excess dairy products and spicy and fried foods could result in this condition as these foods are difficult to digest. They make the stomach produce more acid, triggering heartburn. Other foods and beverages such as chocolate, caffeinated drinks, citrus fruits, and alcohol can interfere with the functioning of the LES, causing it to relax. This results in acid reflux.

5. Overeating
A stomach full of food causes the muscles of the abdomen to stretch; this could increase the pressure on the LES and impair its functioning. This results in food and stomach acid flowing into the esophagus.

6. Lying down immediately after a meal
Another common answer to what causes acid reflux is going to bed or lying down immediately after consuming a meal. You should eat at least 2 hours before bed time as this gives the food you have consumed time to pass from the stomach into the small intestine. Lying down also hampers the process of digestion and makes you prone to acid reflux or heartburn.
