5 Complications of Hepatitis C

The liver, situated in the upper right of the abdomen, is one of the largest and most important organs in our body. It helps absorb vital nutrients from the food and works as a storehouse for various vitamins and nutrients. When the hepatitis C virus attacks the liver, it leads to inflammation and damage. In extreme cases, the condition can even lead to severe complications. Here are the most common complications arising from hepatitis C.

1. Fibrosis
Among the numerous complications arising from hepatitis C, fibrosis is one of the more common ones. When the virus attacks the liver, it leads to inflammation. So, to repair the damage, a scar tissue is repeatedly formed in the affected area. The scar tissue does not allow the liver to function normally. If it is left untreated and develops, it may lead to cirrhosis. However, if the scarring is controlled early, the rest of the liver may function normally, compensating for the damage.

2. Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis occurs when fibrosis spreads uncontrollably. However, many other disorders may also lead to cirrhosis. For instance, hepatitis B and alcoholic hepatitis, when accompanied by fatty liver disease, can cause the same condition. The damage that results from cirrhosis is mostly irreversible. Patients with this problem have no option other than a liver transplant.

3. Liver failure
Among the complications arising from Hepatitis C, liver failure is one of the rarer conditions. However, it is pretty serious. It may be referred to as a fulminant liver failure, acute liver failure, or fulminant hepatic failure. Since the liver is one of the most vital organs in the body, a failure has fatal consequences. While there may be several reasons for the failure, it means that the liver is severely damaged and cannot perform its functions.

4. Glomerulonephritis
Glomerulonephritis is a complication that affects the kidney and is generally the result of inflammation. Often connected to an immune response, chronic hepatitis C and hepatitis B patients are diagnosed with it. If treatment is not provided on time, the inflammation may progress, leading to permanent kidney damage.

5. Hepatic encephalopathy
One of the more severe complications arising from hepatitis C is hepatic encephalopathy. It occurs when the liver fails and causes severe inflammation in the brain. When diagnosed with this condition, patients often feel confused, and it may lead to coma too. In advanced stages, hepatic encephalopathy is fatal.

Hepatitis C may progress and become complicated rapidly. Once diagnosed, it is essential to be aware of the complications arising from hepatitis C. An early diagnosis is vital as it helps seek the proper treatment, improving the patient’s chances of recovery significantly. Doctors usually recommend antiviral drugs, surgery, and therapy to manage the condition.
